Emissions Inventory Project

Beginning in 2002, the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Visibility Union (MANE-VU) began a project to develop an air pollutant emissions inventory covering 11 States and Washington, DC (DC). The States included Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. The objectives of this project were to develop air pollutant emission estimates for residential wood combustion during the 2002 calendar year to assist regional and State planners in a variety of air pollution programs. Residential wood combustion includes burning real wood, artificial logs, or wood pellets in fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, boilers, furnaces, or outdoor wood burning equipment (e.g. outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, chimineas, or barbecues).

During 2003, MANE-VU's contractor, E.H. Pechan & Associates, Inc. (Pechan) and it's subcontractor, Population Research Systems (PRS), conducted a telephone survey of households in the states listed above (plus DC) of residential wood burning practices. From these survey data, Pechan developed estimates of the emissions of a variety of air pollutants. One of these pollutants is particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) in diameter. This pollutant consists of fine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs potentially causing respiratory problems.

Maps of the estimated PM2.5 emissions are shown in the following figures. For the state maps, there are two types: one for indoor equipment emissions and the other for outdoor equipment emissions. Each of these maps is referred to as an emissions density map. An emissions density map shows annual 2002 census tract level emission estimates divided by the area of the census tract:

1. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont (indoor equipment map; outdoor equipment map);

2. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island (indoor equipment map; outdoor equipment map);

3. New York (indoor equipment map; outdoor equipment map);

4. Pennsylvania and New Jersey (indoor equipment map; outdoor equipment map);

5. Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, DC (indoor equipment map; outdoor equipment map); and

6. The MANE-VU region (indoor equipment).

In addition to PM2.5, the emissions inventory covers many other pollutants. These emission estimates will help planners assess the effect of wood burning on air pollution and visibility problems throughout the MANE-VU Region.
