FTIR spectrometers can be used in many different types of emissions applications.  With the ability to measure hundreds of compounds, widespread use has been realized in CEM, stack testing, and engine certification markets.  Each market has its own analytical challenges, such as the level of interferences present, that can have an effect on detection limits and quantification.  With decades experience in these areas, MKS has worked diligently to provide fully developed “recipes” specific for the type of source being tested.  In doing so, the data quality from an MKS FTIR user employing these “recipes” is of the highest quality.  Because an FTIR collects a full spectrum it is in a unique position whereby the actual method used can be evaluated post data collection and updated if a gas component was missing during the original data collection. This type of “reprocessing” of the FTIR data will be shown and the MKS tools that can be used to evaluate the original method or recipe.

An overview of ASTM Method D6348 will be given and the steps associated with running a complete method will be presented.   The ASTM method has a number of QA/QC calculations that are required to determine detection limits and spectral “goodness-of-fit” which will be presented and discussed.

The course will include an overview of the basic checks that should be done for any FTIR system.  This includes, but is not limited to, spectral resolution, detector linearity, and signal-to-noise ratio.


The class is focused around using the ASTM D6348 method which is an approved methodology for many emissions compliance measurements.
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

—  Understand how to ensure the FTIR is working properly
—  Understand what is necessary to perform a field test using extractive FTIR
—  Understand the QA/QC performance parameters of ASTM D6348
—  Run a field test using ASTM D6348 methodology
—  Know and understand what to look for when reviewing FTIR data results


Students should bring the following equipment and materials:
