The two-day lecture course in Emission Calculations and Data Reduction will enable students to understand procedures performed during sources testing and the calculations behind source testing results. The design of the course is to understand the various EPA stack test methods, stack test parameters, and how they compare. Class participants will review calculation methods such as percent moisture calculations, fuel factors, dilution factors, and mass balance calculations. The course will also use case studies of calculations and how these results are used for permitting. The course will employ the use of standard lectures with interactive use of handouts, text, and white board notation.

- Summary of Required Data Inputs for Emission Calculations
- Key Features of Gas Behavior & the Calculation of Density
- Fuel Factor and its role in Calculation Emission Rates
- Dilution Factor and its role in Calculating Emissions
- Moisture Conversions
- Calculation of Mass Emissions from Stack Flow and Fuel Flow
- Mass Balance Formulas
- EPA’s Electronic Reporting Tool (ERT)
The course goes over many calculations that can be used to verify if a test has been conducted properly. Attendees are required to bring a calculator to participate in the course.
