Electric utilities operating coal-fired power generating units are challenged to control mercury emissions to meet state and federal regulatory requirements, such as the recently-finalized Mercury and Air Toxics standards (MATS) rule. Many utilities sell their fly ash. However, moderate levels of PAC present in the fly ash may render the material unsalable into concrete applications, such as a partial replacement for Portland cement. Mineral-based sorbents / reagents are now offered in the marketplace as an alternative to powdered activated carbon (PAC).

William Hizny, BASF, will present on Mercury Sorbent HX™, a brominated mineral sorbent enabling a low carbon solution for mercury emissions compliance. Mr. Hizny will review the technology and present demonstration results for mercury capture, balance-of-plant impacts, and concrete performance, including petrographic analysis.

Jim Butz, Novinda, will present on another mineral-based reagent, Amended Silicates, including its oxidation capabilities, capture mechanism, SO3 tolerance and advantages versus PAC/Brominated-PAC. Mr. Butz will also present on recent field test results with different air pollution control configurations.

The Minamata Convention represents a concerted global effort to minimize mercury emissions to the environment from all sources. Finally, Doug Austin, ICAC will  provide a quick overview of the agreement made by over 140 countries this past January, and the next steps in the process to make it legally binding.  Air quality regulators will better understand their roles in achieving the goals of the Convention.
