The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Air Quality is currently recruiting for an Industrial Hygiene Consultant.

Brief Description of Work:

  • This position provides expert knowledge in toxicology and toxicological risk assessment related to airborne toxic chemicals. The primary responsibilities include:
  • Managing the Secretary’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) on Toxic Air Pollutants, preparing health risk assessments, researching and interpreting peer-reviewed literature, running exposure models, executing data analyses and interpreting results.
  • Serves as a technical and administrative liaison between the SAB, the Division, and the Secretary.
  • Development and processing of rules related to toxic air pollutants and other air pollutants in accordance with the Administrative Procedures Act (APA).
  • Support in information and data gathering, analysis, synthesis, and communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Staff support to the Environmental Management Commission’s Air Quality Committee, assists with public hearings, develops responses to public comment and prepares hearing records as rules go through the APA process.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related curriculum.


  • Three years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene inspections


  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

Recruitment range: $52,551 - $60,284
